I am interested in what is considered a native. My parents came from other areas of Kansas. Since I was born in Manhattan, I guess I’m a native. Does being native make me better than non-natives? There are likely several differing opinions. There are pros and cons to native plants and people.
One can do a search for lists of native plants. The Dyck Arboretum on the Plains in Hesston, Kansas promotes the use of native plants for landscaping purposes. One can search their online plant library.
The USDA website covers all the United States with native plants for each state. Another site is the www.plantnativeks.weebly.com resource.
Fortunately, native plants can grow in non-native environments.
The common home landscape is not a native environment. Soils have been altered with any construction project. The water drainage is altered with buildings, driveways, walks and such.
Buildings will change wind flow and sunlight patterns. Automated irrigation systems are not part of the native environment.
Non-native plants and people serve a purpose in our environment.
Sometimes you can select them and some just show up. Learning to use them for the landscape is a good thing.
