The annual Kansas State Track and Field Championship meet kicked off Friday morning in Wichita. Here are a list of area athletes who found the medal stand on the first day of the meet as of press time.
Frankfort’s Ty Smith finished fifth in the pole vault in 1A with a height off 12 feet, 6 inches which was a personal best.
Joining Smith in medalist camp for pole vault was Valley Heights’ sophomore Jayden DeWalt who tied for seventh in 2A with a jump of 11 feet, 6 inches. That height was also a personal best.
Wabaunsee’s Payton Wurtz earned the first of what could end up being four medals after taking second in the 3200 with a time of 11:33.29. Fellow Wabaunsee distance runner and senior Rebekah Stuhlstaz finished 10th in the race with a time of 12:37.45.
Rock Creek girls came up big in the high jump, led by sophomore Ayla Klingenberg who won the event with a personal best height of 5 feet 2 inches. Freshman teammate Ambree Portelli finished seventh with a height of 4 feet, 10 inches.
For the Mustang boys, Trevor Christensen placed seventh in pole vault with a personal-best height of 12 feet, 6 inches.Â
For Wamego, senior Brady Stegman finished seventh with a time of 9:56.28.
For Manhattan High, freshman Jorryn Hall placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 4 inches. Teammates Abigail Gruber (34 feet, 8.5 inches) and Makayla Anhorn (31 feet, 4 inches) finished 11th and 15th overall.
Junior Faith Kratochvil finished eighth in the high jump with a personal-best height of 5 feet.
For the Indian boys, junior Samuel Molt placed third in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 172 feet. He reached the distance on his first toss and didn't get 25 feet of it his final five attempts.
Aaron Newcomer and Vincent Malone finished fourth and fifth in the high jump, both reaching a height of 6-feet, 4-inches which was a personal best for Malone.
