Lions Club
The Manhattan Lions Club met Aug. 1 in the Blue Hills Room with 23 members and one guest present. Big Lion Diana Chapel called the meeting to order. Lion Carol Hockersmith led everyone in singing “God Bless America” followed by the Pledge of Allegiance before singing “Lions Roar.” Summer birthdays recognized were Lions Dave Schafer and Chris Wilson. Anniversaries were Lion K. Taylor and husband DeWayne, Lion Chris Wilson and husband Ron, Lions Joe and Carol Ott and Lions Carol and Alan Van Namen.
The next meeting will be Sept. 5 in the Blue Hills Room. On Aug. 19 the Manhattan Lions will celebrate their 85th Anniversary. Solar Kiwanis Club
The Manhattan Solar Kiwanis Club met at noon on Tuesday at the Blue Hills Room. There were 12 members present and two guests. Club President Tepe led the meeting. Treavor Heeney led the song, Steve Bartle led the pledge and Ron Jackson gave the invocation. Announcements were made by President Tepe. Doug A. and Karl D. attended the Kansas District Kiwanis Convention last weekend in Salina. Our August Solar Kiwanis Board Meeting will be on Aug. 16 at noon at Bluestem Bistro. All Solarians are invited to attend.
President Tepe turned the meeting over to Solarian Doug Ackley who conducted an “orienduction” for three new members: Treavor Heeney, Cheryl Jones and Brent Jones. Solar Kiwanis meets at noon on Tuesdays at the Blue Hills Room next to RC McGraw’s in the Blue Hills Shopping Center. At next meeting, Solarian Pat Pesci will give the program about Orvieto, Italy and K-State Study Abroad. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

Rotary Club
President-elect Randy Peterson opened the Aug. 3 meeting welcoming guest, Matt Casey, executive director of governmental relations at Kansas State University. This week, fifteen nonprofit agencies picked up chips, detergent and other sundries at the Community Cares Chest. Cup money this month is for Thrive.
Duane Dunn introduced Katharine Hensler, Director of Riley County Historical Museum. Katharine spoke on the Museum and Historical Society: Then and Now. Over the last year, the Riley County Historical Society has created a new website set to go live in September, reestablished a monthly website, developed a formal membership program, has a collaborative strategic plan in progress, released a new set of educational programs including fireside chats and so much more.
The Manhattan Rotary Club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Manhattan Country Club.
Manhattan Duplicate Bridge
Linda Schottler and Mory Mort won the Manhattan Duplicate Bridge Club game Aug. 7. Katha Hurt and Dianne Childs tied for second with Gary Stemple and Guy Powers, who also won flights B and C. Georgia Reynolds and David Mills were fourth in A and second in B. Dan Otto and Sherry Downey tied for fifth with Carol Reinsch and Nancy Ryan. Roger Allerheilegen and Larry Cora were third in flight C.
The club meets every Monday at 1 p.m. at the Senior’s Center, and invites all bridge players.
