A young woman with Manhattan connections is a national champion and is headed to the U.S. Open tennis tournament later this month.
Olivia Center, granddaughter of Manhattan’s Rosalind Center and the late Melvin Center, won the 18-and-under girls doubles title over the weekend in La Jolla, California with her partner, Kate Fakih, Sunday in a three-set match (6-7, 6-1, 6-4) over Alanis Hamilton of Bentonville, Ark., and Kayla Chung of Philadelphia.
Center is the daughter of Brian and Vivian Center. Brian is a 1986 Manhattan High grad. Brian’s brother, Michael Center, was a state champion at MHS in 1982, and went on to play at KU and eventually coach at Texas. Brian is a lawyer in Pasadena, Calif. Olivia grew up training together on tennis courts with Fakih since they were both 6; they are both committed to playing in college at UCLA.
As the winner of the U.S. Tennis Association’s national tournament, Center and Fakih earned an automatic bid into the main draw at the U.S. Open, which starts at the end of August in New York. The draw for that tournament will be unveiled about Aug. 25, which will determine their first-round opponent. But as one of the four Grand Slams, it will include the best professional tennis players in the world.
