I WONDER | Why are there stop signs along Poyntz Avenue?

The city installed the stop signs because of the “temporary detour route” for the 17th Street closure, said Vivienne Uccello, city public information officer.

The signs make it easier for drivers to turn onto Poyntz from South Manhattan Avenue.

Previously, when traffic backed up enough, it became difficult for drivers on South Manhattan to turn onto Poyntz.

The city is repairing the sewer along 17th Street between Houston and Pierre streets. Karen Becker, principal engineer, said crews installed the sewer pipe and are working on backfilling the street.

Becker anticipates the road will open in early November. Uccello said the city will remove the stop signs after 17th Street reopens.
