Recently, The Mercury reported about the memorandum of understanding between the city government and the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation related to the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Foundation. The memorandum was unanimously approved by the Manhattan City Commission. I would like to share clarifying information regarding the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Foundation (MPRF).
MPRF is actively seeking community members to participate in several committees. If interested, contact us at info@mhkparksandrecfoundation.org for more information. MPRF is also seeking donations and financial support from the community. Four specific projects have been identified at this time. They are outlined below:
Barrier-Free Program — The program encourages participants with disabilities to participate in a theatre program in which they work together to write and act in their own production. It empowers participants, increases self-confidence, and improves self-awareness. PRD would also like to expand this program to include other barrier free programs in addition to theatre. Fundraising goal is $10,000 per year.
Youth Scholarship Program — MPRF wants to ensure that every child or disabled adult has the opportunity to participate in any PRD program, regardless of their ability to pay. Fundraising goal is $100,000 per year.
Indoor Aquatic Center — MPRF aims to be a private partner to the PRD’s effort to bring a first-class indoor aquatic center to our community. This effort will take significant community cooperation and support to create and maintain an indoor aquatic center. Our initial fundraising goal for this effort is $10,000,000.
Scoreboard sponsorship — Nearly all outdoor scoreboards need to be replaced in our community. The focus of this opportunity is for businesses sponsorship. Costs are still being gathered so the fundraising goal will be announced on our website.
Our community is passionate about parks and recreation. We love our community, and we know access to vibrant, equitable rec programming is key for Manhattan’s quality of life and sense of place. Kids need to make great memories and have recreational experiences that teach them valuable life lessons: teamwork, persistence, creativity and many others. Please consider getting involved with your time, talent and treasure.
