Manhattan High baseball and softball players received postseason honors this week after both participated in the 6A state tournaments over the weekend.
Indians baseball senior pitcher/third baseman Kyler Horsman won the Centennial League’s player of the year, while head coach Don Hess was named the Centennial League’s coach of the year. Meanwhile, junior pitcher Jake Wolcott earned newcomer of the year honors.
Horsman joined senior outfielder Ian Luce, senior catcher Jaxon Vikander, senior shortstop PJ Hughes and senior pitcher Ian Bluemel on the first-team all-league list for baseball. Senior second baseman Keenan Schartz and senior first baseman Tate Hoover were second-team picks. Wolcott, senior outfielder Tyler Gagnon and senior outfielder Jaxon Bowles received honorable mention.
Schartz, Luce and Horsman also made all-state first team, while Gagnon earned second-team honors and Vikander and Hughes were honorable mentions.
On the softball side, senior pitcher Kierra Goos, junior catcher Reagan Neitzel and senior outfielder Avery Hafliger were on the All-Centenial League first team. Junior pitcher/first baseman Jaden McGee and junior third baseman McKenzie Reid made the second team.
All-state softball selections were not available by press time.
Manhattan baseball earned the top seed out of the 6A East regional, but fell to Blue Valley North 10-4 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence. The Indians finished the year at 18-3.
The softball team made it to state for the first time since 2004. Manhattan lost an extra-innings heartbreaker to Derby 3-2 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence. With loss, the Indians ended with a final record of 16-6 this season.
Area all-state baseball picks
Wamego and Rock Creek baseball players found themselves on the 4A all-state lists.
Mustangs junior Daegen Vinduska and senior Ethan Burgess were both on the first team, while senior Maddox Ibarra was on the honorable mention team.
Red Raiders senior Chase Cottam also received honorable mention.
Rock Creek went 21-2 this season and saw its season end Thursday with a 5-3 eight-inning loss to Paola in the quarterfinal round of the 4A state tournament at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.
Wamego (11-8) lost to the Mustangs 5-1 in the regional championship May 16.
