Kansas State men’s golf picked up exactly where it left off last season, opening the 2023 season with a team win in the Wildcat Invitational.
The Wildcats shot a 17-under 847 (284-273-290), five strokes better than second place Southern Illinois and 11 better than third place Grand Canyon.
K-State had five golfers finish in the top 11, three of which were members of the scoring lineup in senior Luke O’Neill and juniors Cooper Schultz and Nicklaus Mason.
The invitational win is the second straight for the Wildcats and the fifth victory overall dating back to the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
“I’m really proud of how the guys competed this week. It was a nice team win as everyone contributed,” head coach Grant Robbins said in a written statement. “I was really proud of the poise we showed down the stretch today. It got pretty close there toward the end, but we hit the shots and made the putts we needed to. It’s a great experience for us this early in the season and definitely something we will build on.”
The top Wildcat performer was Hutchinson Community College transfer Alex Lindstrom, who played as an individual and finished second, shooting a 10-under 206 (73-67-66).
Schultz was two places behind, finishing tied for fourth with an 8-under 208 (69-69-70) and O’Neill finished sixth with a 6-under 210 (70-68-72).
Mason finished eighth with a 3-under 213 (76-66-71) and J.P. Roller, a transfer from Texas Tech who was also competing as an individual, tied for 11th with a 1-under 215 (73-72-70).
Rounding out the scoring lineup, Ian McCrary, a transfer from St. Louis, finished tied for 27th with a 4-over 220 (73-70-77) and Ben Stoller tied for 71st with a 16-over 232 (72-83-77).
The Wildcats will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, next Monday and Tuesday for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at UNM Golf Course.
