A Riley County District Court judge sentenced a former USD 383 paraeducator Thursday to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
Aaron Zachry, 33, who worked at Northview Elementary School, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated solicitation of a child.
Police originally charged him with 37 counts of child sex crimes following his arrest for allegedly having nude photographs of 10-year-old boys on his phone.
As part of his plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop 35 counts listed in an amended criminal complaint. The offenses occurred in June 2020 and March 2021. Zachry was arrested in June 2021 at Northview Pool.
“Ultimately, I have to trust the justice system,” Judge Kendra Lewison said before her ruling. “I think Mr. Zachry will have the opportunity to prove himself someday. Even if he does get out of prison at some point, he’ll have to wear an electronic monitor for the rest of his life and will always be a registered sex offender.”
Victims, their family members and Zachry himself made their case on Thursday for what his sentence should be.
“I’m so sorry,” Zachry said with tears in his eyes. “It won’t happen again. I want a second chance. I want to see a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Assistant Riley County attorney Trinity Muth asked for consecutive life sentences — one for each count — which would have meant Zachary had a chance of parole after serving 50 years. Lewison ruled that he would serve the terms concurrently.
Zachry will have the opportunity to appeal the ruling for two weeks.
